Greater Baltimore
Making Giant Strides
Many Cities Have Reached
Their Zenith
*
Baltimore Will Not for a Century to Come
B
ALTIMORE has reached a point along the path of her forward movement where it is necessary that special emphasis should be given to the spirit of energy that now governs and enhances her progress.
In the development of commerce and industries Baltimore has reached the point where her institutions are expanding, her power in- creasing, her fame accumulating and her citizens fortunate in the possession of wealth, happiness and vast opportunities. This, there- fore, is the opportune time and proper method of making these facts known abroad, in order that new capital, new citizens and new enterprises may be attracted here to contribute to the sum total of Baltimore's prosperity.
We desire therefore to prove how well Baltimore deserves her eminent position in financial, commercial and industrial activity.
No other city offers to capital and industry present advantages and future prospects superior to those presented by this great city.
Baltimore promises a phenomenal increase in wealth and popula- tion, a wonderful development of manufacturing and financial interests, a marvelous progress and expansion, both in a material and ethical sense, and is demonstrating her ability to gain and maintain that splendid position to which she is entitled by her geographical location.
Baltimore is situated like a great toll station on the highway from the World's East to the World's West and all commerce, all progress, all industry, it would seem, must finally pass here and pay toll. Before many years have passed Baltimore will take the cotton and the crude oil, and the sand and the grain, and other raw products of the world and transform them into commodities of supreme commercial value. Over the ocean, the bays and the rivers will pass more tonnage through Baltimore than any other city in America.
INTRODUCTORY. 11
In Baltimore, mercantile trade is prosperous, financial interests are expanding in number and magnitude, and every department of busi- ness activity is advancing rapidly and surely, and the demand for real estate holdings is increasing, and uncommon stir of life is felt in every artery of trade, notwithstanding the stringency of the times, and the social life of Baltimore is charming and varied ; excellent libraries, art galleries and educational institutions contribute to the cultivation of the masses, while abundant sources of amusement and relaxation go to make Baltimore a desirable place in which to live.
We, therefore, declare our faith in the future of the city and set forth the belief that Baltimore has but stepped over the threshold into an era of unparallelled growth and prosperity. In support of these rep- resentations we refer to the one incontrovertible fact, that all conditions unite to bring more interests here as the logical centre of the world's commerce.
In the financial world Baltimore holds high position. Her bank deposits, building and loan investments and interest-drawing money aggregate a total which, if divided among the total population, would mean an average of $ioo to every man, woman and child in the city. The per capita circulation of the United States is but $35. The banks and trust companies are among the soundest, most substantial and care- fully managed of any fiduciary institutions in this country. Baltimore is justly proud of her banks in which everybody has the utmost confi- dence.
Real Estate
In some instances property has almost doubled in value in the last decade — the valuation being perfectly natural, never based on specula- tion, and has been simply in response to demand, and prices are con- stantly increasing.
Educational Advantages
In her educational advantages Baltimore enjoys the highest standard of excellence. Our schools are not surpassed by those of any other city. Our churches embrace all denominations, and their pulpits are filled by men whose names are prominent among the earnest Christian workers of this nation.
The Merchants and
Manufacturers' Association
of this city was organized by the leading manufacturers, business and professional men, its object being the promotion and advancement of the general welfare of Baltimore and vicinity, and the encouragement and protection of her trade, commerce and manufactures. From the start The Merchants and Manufacturers' Association has made its power felt. The members of this organization are men of the widest compre- hension, giving their supervision to every department of business life, and nothing which concerns the advancement of the city or vicinity is outside the scope of their work. The publicity committee has been
12 INTRODUCTORY.
energetic in advertising the city abroad, guiding the investment of capital, soliciting the establishment of new industries, encouraging the undertaking of important works and originating, fostering and aiding every enterprise which promises to advance the general good. The work of this Association, as well as that of The Travelers and Mer- chants' Association is of a purely public character, and nothing is con- cealed from the public. These Associations are not concerned with the thought how much each member shall be individually benefited, but are bending every effort to advance the interests of the whole.
Both The Merchants and Manufacturers' Association and The Travelers and Merchants' Association stand ready to represent her citizens in all legitimate matters, to answer all communications and to give every encouragement to those impressed with Baltimore's attrac- tions or desire to make their homes in this beautiful, progressive and prosperous city.
Our Merchants
Our merchants stand abreast with those of other great cities of the world ; their emporiums, likewise, would be a credit to any city. Sub- stantial, successful, enterprising and progressive, liberal, yet conservative, they form the foundation of Baltimore's prosperity.
Baltimore built the first canal ; the first telegraph message that ever flashed over the wires was sent from Baltimore ; the first city to aid in the construction of a railroad was Baltimore ; ours was the first city in which an electric car ever ran and the first city to be illuminated by gas.
The city spreads over thirty -two square miles of hill and plain and strikes every visitor within its gates as most delightfully situated. We feel that we may say with pardonable pride that it is one of the most elegant cities of the world. Every stranger at once feels the charm of its bright streets and its polite people of gentle speech and manners.
The proof of Baltimore's present importance will be shown by the following figures — the value of commodities distributed by us from January, 1907, to January, 1908 :
Dry Goods $ 41,175,000
Groceries and Provisions 35,987,000

INTRODUCTORY. 13
Commercial and
Industrial Advantages
Baltimore is not only the metropolis of the South, but the central harbor of the Eastern Coast of North America.
Baltimore has abundant manufacturing sites, facilities and terminals of a great port, and accessibility to coal and iron fields and raw materials of various kinds.
Further advantages are:
Proximity to sources of the most diversified food supply at lower cost than any large city in the United States.
Advantageous distributive centre to any city or port in the world.
Warehouse and factory rental much lower than in any other city.
Cheapest market in which merchants of the South and West may replenish their stock.
Greatest corn port in the world, and rapidly advancing as a great grain centre.
Conservative financial methods; best banks in the world.
Moderate real estate values and exceptional opportunities for profit- able investments.
Comfortable homes may be bought and paid for same as rent.
Ample supply of efficient labor.
Plenty of Schools, Libraries, Churches, and all other elements that go to make Baltimore a delightful place of residence.
The commercial organizations aim to make Greater Balti- more the most attractive city in the United States.
Baltimore's Population
An estimate of the population of a city is a matter necessarily enjoined upon the Directory Publisher. The figures which we herewith tender are arrived at from careful calculation and can be considered practically accurate.
689,910
These figures represent all persons living or doing business within the city limits who go to make up the population of Greater Baltimore, and also include all people living in the adjacent suburbs.
A Directory Is For Service
No person can get the best results from a good Directory except through an understanding of its resources and how to utilize them. To learn the scope of information given in this Directory consult the Index to Contents on pages 14 to 16.
To the great Baltimore public we wish to extend our thanks for its hearty co-operation with us in our efforts to publish a City Directory which shall be in keeping with New and Greater Baltimore.
R, L. POLK & CO^ of Baltimore.

STREET, AVENUE AND STREET CAR LINE GUIDE
Revised and Corrected Up to March 1st, 1908
By the decimal system of numbering honses one hundred numbers are allot- te<l to each sauare, commencing at CHARLES STREET running EAST and ■W^EST and at BAL.TI3IORE STREET running NORTH and SOUTH. AU other streets not coniniencing at either of the J above points are numbered in accord- ance Tfith this system. By this system Even Numbers are invariably founil on the North and West side of Streets, and Odd Numbers on the South and East side. The follovv'ing classification and arrang'ement of Streets forms a diagram for each Street, giving its starting point, intersections and numbers, and VFill be found of great utility in finding special locations. From this list the location of any number on a Street can be ascer-
tained; as, for instance, T%'ishing to liuoTV at what part of Aisquith Street No. 621 comes, look at Aisquith Street and you vpill find that McElderry Street runs from 601 and Monument 701, sho^iving that No. 621 Aisquith Street is betTveen McElderry and 3Ionument Streets.
The marginal letters of the alphabet refer to the nearest street c;ir line. For example, you ivish to go to 621 Aisauith; you refer to Aisquith Street in the Street Directory and find that 621 -tvould l>e between McElderry Street and Mon- ument Street, and the letter "H" in the margin, then by referring to the street railT^ay lines on preceding pages you find the letter '*H" is the Harford Ave- nue line, vphich is the nearest car.
